How we use Envato Elements

Envato Elements is our stock library: b-roll, music and sound effects for videos, all under one subscription.

The actual workflow

  • Each video has a shot list; matching clips are pulled from Elements at a steady, fair-use pace.
  • Every download is licensed to the project it is used in, and the license is filed with the project.
  • Clips go through a quick check (no black frames, enough motion) before they reach the edit.

What it replaced

Buying clips one at a time, or making do with whatever free footage turned up.

Rough cost for a setup like ours$16.50–$39/mo, depending on yearly or monthly billing.

Tips

  • License every clip to the project as you download it. Doing it later is how licenses go missing.
  • Search for motion and mood, not literal objects. Literal stock looks like stock.

Gotchas

  • Licenses are per project, so reusing a clip in a new video means licensing it again.
  • Lean on it too hard and every video starts to look the same.
