How we use Tailscale

Tailscale is the private network between our machines. The always-on box, the laptop and the phone can reach each other from anywhere, safely, without opening anything to the internet.

The actual workflow

  • Heavy jobs like video renders can be sent to whichever machine is free.
  • Private dashboards and previews are reachable over the tailnet from a phone.
  • A small watcher checks that every machine is still reachable and flags the one that is not.

What it replaced

Port forwarding, dynamic DNS and remote-desktop apps.

Rough cost for a setup like ours$0. The personal plan covers it.
List price (Oct 27, 2026)Free for personal use. Business plans from $8/user/mo.

Tips

  • Use the tailnet address in links you send yourself. It works from anywhere and stays private.
  • Name machines plainly so logs make sense.

Gotchas

  • When it drops, everything that depends on it drops too, and it is not always obvious why.
  • Sleeping laptops fall off the network. Keep the always-on jobs on an always-on machine.
